Signs That It’s Time to Repair Your Furnace
admin • January 13, 2020
A man is working on a heating system in a home.

No, we don’t mean for you to repair your furnace on your own. There is never a furnace repair job that is simple and straightforward enough for a nonprofessional to handle. When your furnace is in need of repairs, it is time to call upon our trained professionals. It’s just that simple.

What’s not so simple, however, is figuring out when your furnace is actually in need of repairs. We understand that you don’t want to schedule furnace repair in Whittier when it’s not really necessary, but you also really need to jump on it when problems do develop. Today, we’ll be sharing some signs that are red flags for furnace repair needs.

Your Furnace Is Blowing Cool Air

We actually wrote about this specific problem in a recent post, but it is worth covering briefly here as well. Why? Because this is one of the most obvious, and most commonly encountered, warning signs that there is something wrong with your furnace. Like so many furnace problems, it could have a number of different causes.

It is possible, for instance, that you have a leak in your ductwork. This could allow cool air from non-heated areas in the house into the system. You could also have a fuel delivery or combustion problem, or an issue with your heating elements in an electric furnace. Either way, you won’t be living comfortably until the problem is resolved.

Your Heating Costs Are Spiking

We don’t have really frigid temperatures around here, so our heating bills typically aren’t that high—not compared to somewhere like Minnesota, at least. However, you still need to take an uptick in the amount it costs to heat your home effectively seriously. Why? Because an overall decline in energy efficiency is a good sign that something is wrong.

Routine maintenance will keep your system working at peak efficiency and performance levels. If your system is well-maintained but your heating costs seem higher than is justified by your use, let us know. Really any problem with your heater could negatively affect its overall energy efficiency.

Your Furnace Runs Inconsistently

Does your furnace do a decent job of heating your home? Does it start up, but then shut back down quickly? But then start right back up? But then—well, you get it. If your system is running sporadically like this, then there is definitely something wrong. However, this is one instance in which you should check something out on your own before scheduling repairs. Believe it or not, this issue—actually called “short cycling”—could be caused by a very dirty air filter.

That air filter should be checked about once a month. If it gets too dirty, it can drag down energy efficiency. It can also lead to short cycling as the airflow resistance that it creates causes the system to overheat, though. That, along with the wear and tear that the cycling on and off puts on the system, can lead to serious damages to your equipment. These filters are cheap and simple to install, so don’t let this problem cost you in the long run! If the filter is fresh but your furnace still short cycles, then it’s time to give us a call.
