Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cool Air?
admin • December 30, 2019

Temperatures are quite cool this time of year, so of course, you depend on your furnace to keep your home warm and cozy! But, what happens when your furnace starts acting more like your air conditioner? Certainly, this can’t be good!

There are a number of reasons why your furnace might be blowing cool air, and below, we have outlined a few of them for you. All you have to do is keep reading to find out more (oh, and of course, remember to call our team when you need furnace repair in Whittier.)

So, Why the Cool Air?

Like we mentioned above, there are a number of reasons why your furnace might not be working properly. These include:

Thermostat Troubles

Sometimes the problem isn’t with the furnace itself, but rather with the thermostat. If your thermostat is malfunctioning, it might be misreading indoor temperatures or it might not be properly regulating the temperature in the furnace.

We also recommend checking your thermostat to see if its set to “AUTO” rather than “ON.” When it is set to “ON,” the fan will blow continuously, even if the furnace isn’t actually heating the air.

A Clogged Air Filter

A clogged air filter can cause significant problems if ignored, one of which is a lack of heat. A dirty air filter restricts airflow into your furnace, causing it to overheat. When this happens, your system will shut down as a safety measure. The fan, however, will continue to blow air to cool down the heat exchanger.  Changing your clogged air filter might just be the way to restore heat to your home.

Broken Heating Elements

When any of the elements responsible for heating air are broken, you can expect cool air from your furnace. A professional can inspect each element of your furnace to pinpoint the source of the problem.

Ductwork Breaches

When there is a breach in the ductwork, warm air will leak from the system. In addition, a breach will cause air from other parts of the house, most of it colder than air from the furnace, to enter the system causing a drop in temperature. Luckily, our team offers duct testing and sealing!

Schedule Your Repairs With a Pro

If your furnace is in need of repairs, do not hesitate to call in a certified HVAC professional for help. Only a professional has the tools, training, and expertise to safely and correctly handle the complex needs of your system, the first time around.
