Is Professional Duct Cleaning Worth It?

A vacuum cleaner is being used to clean a dryer vent.

Look, we get it. If you’re like the average homeowner, then you probably don’t think a whole lot about the ductwork that is snaking its way through your home. This is because air ducts are usually hidden from view, and that’s for a reason. They’re not very pretty, right? Plus, they need to be well insulated in order to keep your home cool and comfortable in the summer, and efficiently warm in the winter.

You shouldn’t really need to think about the condition of your air ducts too often, but they do need attention every once in a while. While there’s no need for you to understand all the ins and outs of your ductwork, there are a few things we would like to share with you about how dirty ducts impact your home and why you need professional duct cleaning.

Professional Duct Cleaning = Improved Indoor Air Quality

The primary reason most homeowners schedule professional duct cleaning services is to help boost their indoor air quality. Sure, your HVAC systems have an air filter. But the purpose of this air filter is to protect the HVAC systems themselves, not your indoor air quality. And of course, you may have some indoor air quality systems in place such as a whole-house air purifier. But this is going to be installed in the return duct, where air first comes into the system. The rest of your air ducts don’t get cleaned on their own.

This means that allergens, dirt, irritants, germs, and other debris can infiltrate the air ducts and start causing problems, either through cracks in the ductwork itself, through the vents in your home, or even just from years of sitting untouched. Professional duct cleaning requires a professional technician to completely suck out this debris, which means that allergens and germs are less likely to make their way back into your home.

Professional Duct Cleaning = Better Performing HVAC Equipment

All of the dirt and debris that builds u pin your ductwork can interfere with the performance of your forced-air HVAC systems. The most efficient air conditioning and heating systems condition the air and then distribute it back into the rooms of your home through your air ducts. Filthy ductwork can cause friction and resistances that will slow down the air.

As a result, your air conditioner won’t be able to cool as effectively, and your heater won’t be able to heat as effectively. You may try to adjust your thermostat to compensate, and cause your HVAC system to run longer than it should have to in order to condition your home, and therefore inefficiently.

How Often Do You Need Duct Cleaning?

Fortunately, duct cleaning isn’t a service you need every year, like HVAC system maintenance. But it is a service you should invest in every few years. When looking for someone to conduct your duct cleaning, you’ll want to make sure you’re employing an experienced HVAC company, and not a general handyman who promises you quality for an extremely low price–the saying “it’s too good to be true” applies here!
