Did you know that the quality of the air in your home could actually be worse than the quality of the air outdoors? In fact, this is true for most homes—especially those that don’t have the right indoor air quality solutions in place.
Today’s modern homes are designed with air conditioning and heating efficiency in mind. This means that they are built tightly so they don’t let any conditioned air out, or outside air into the home. This is fantastic for your HVAC costs every year, but it’s not great for your air quality. Among the numerous products and services we have to help with this is a whole-house air purifier.
An air purifier, at its core, is an indoor air quality system that helps reduce contaminants in the air. These pollutants can include allergens, such as dust and dirt, or even more harmful particles like bacteria and mold—both of which can make you and your family ill.
There isn’t just one type of air purifier, either. Each type of air purifier has its own unique purpose and advantages. We’ve highlighted a couple different kinds below.
You’ll notice that we did not include the HVAC air filer—that is, the air filter that comes standard with your air conditioner or heater. This is because that air filter isn’t designed to protect your indoor air quality—it’s designed to protect the HVAC system itself.
But the following air purifiers do protect your actual air quality:
This is one type of air purifier on the market today. It works by removing microscopic impurities from your indoor air. This can include dust, smog, smoke, pet dander, and even mold spores.
These particles may seem harmless—after all they’re so small that you can’t see them—but they can have a pretty big negative impact on your household’s health. This is especially true if you have household members with allergies or asthma.
We’ll mention here that if you want the best results with your electronic air purifier, you’ll need to remember to clean the plates on a regular basis. The effectiveness of this system wears down as dirt accumulates, otherwise.
Also referred to as UV lights or germicidal lights, a UV air purifier makes your home healthier form the ductwork, where they’re installed. UV lights eliminate biological contaminants like mildew or mold. As you can probably guess, the interior of your air ducts is damp and cool, creating a great breeding ground for these microorganisms.
Homeowners often wonder—if UV lights are so harmful to microorganisms, are they safe for families? The answer is yes! UV lights are completely harmless to people and pets, plus they can help HVAC systems work more efficiently, too. They’re super convenient as the attack potentially harmful contaminants before they even have the chance to enter your indoor air.
