After another long summer, warm weather is finally coming to an end
, and most homeowners have already begun using their heaters on a regular basis. Furnaces never see as much use as air conditioners in Southern California, but we still get our share of chilly nights, and that means your furnace is going to need to respond on a regular basis. If yours is on its last legs, now is the perfect time to get it replaced. Doing so gives you the time to plan the replacement appropriately, and means you can enjoy the benefits of a new unit for the entire winter.
But how can you know when you need a new furnace? When is it appropriate to get rid of an old unit, and when can repairs and a little TLC get it safely through another winter? In the end, only you can make that decision, but the issue comes down to one of cost. If it’s more cost effective to keep an older unit running through the winter, then you should do so. If, on the other hand, your current system costs more than you feel it’s worth to continue running, then it’s probably time for a new one. There are two basic factors contributing to that decision. In most cases, both of them should be in play to consider replacing the system.
The state of the warranty is the first big factor you should consider. As long as it is still in effect, you should likely continue with your existing furnace instead of replacing it with a new one. The warranty covers all of the original parts of your furnace, which means that if one of them break down, the costs of repairing it will be significantly reduced. You need only pay for the cost of labor, and perhaps a few minor components like bolts or screws.
When the warranty has expired, it’s time to take a close look at the costs involved in keeping your old heater. If it’s still functioning effectively and repairs aren’t that expensive, you should continue with it. Only when the warranty has expired and costs are getting too high should you seriously consider replacement.
In many cases, the costs get too high when a repair is involved. This can mean a single repair that runs higher than you feel the system is worth, or it can mean a number of smaller repairs that take place in a short amount of time. Generally speaking, if your system needs more than two repairs in a single twelve-month period, it’s time to think about replacing it.
In addition, you also need to factor monthly costs into your equation. Good maintenance can help keep an older system running smoothly, but age always takes its toll and that means it’s going to cost more and more in order to keep your system running every month. Eventually, costs may get so high that you should replace your system for a more effective one: giving your monthly budget a break in the process.
