AC Efficiency: Would Your Ducts Pass the Test?
admin • August 24, 2020
A person is working on a wooden structure in a house.

Living in California means running your air conditioner. It means running your air conditioner a lot. And if you’re running your air conditioner a lot, then you are right to be concerned with its overall energy efficiency. It only makes sense.

Nobody wants to overpay for comfort.

There are a lot of reasons why your air conditioning system may not function as efficiently as it should. Chief among them, though, is leaky, damaged air ducts. And how do you know if this the case? You schedule duct testing in Whittier, CA with us!

What’s the Big Deal?

The big deal is that all of the air that your air conditioner cools is distributed throughout your home through this system of air ducts. And you know what? The air surrounding those ducts is not always cool!

When that’s the case—between walls, in attics, and in other non-conditioned spaces of the home’s construction—the heat in those spaces can get right into the ducts. And when that happens, the air warms up.

And when that happens, you essentially wind up paying to recool air that you’ve already cooled! That strains your AC, and it wastes a ton of energy.

What Causes It?

There are a whole of reasons why air ducts may leak. You really can’t avoid all of them. Over time, any construction material is going to degrade. Over time, issues like humidity can take a toll.

It’s also possible that your ducts may be damaged during repairs or renovations around the house, though. That can be mitigated by working with a trustworthy, well-reviewed, professional contractor.

What Should I Do?

You yourself cannot really do anything about leaking ductwork. We, on the other hand, very much can! And the first thing that we’ll do is actually figure out if your ducts are leaking. We’ll seal up vents and registers, pressurize the system, and determine for sure if this is a problem you’re facing.

Once we’ve done that, we can move forward with pinpointing the source of the leaks. From there, we’ll seal up or repair your ductwork as needed. There is absolutely no way for homeowners to do this type of work on their own.

What Are the Benefits

A major benefit of havinng your ducts tested and sealed as needed is the boost in energyy efficiency that you’ll enjoy. This is one of the best ways to save money without sacrificing your comfort, especially in a climate like ours where ACs are in pretty regular use.

That’s not really where the benefits end, though. You’ll not only save money when your ducts are properly sealed up, but you’ll likely live more comfortably, as well. How? By distributing conditioned air more evenly and effectively throughout your home.

Plus, indoor air quality will be better. Those leaks don’t only pull warm air into the duct system. They can pull in pollutants. And when that happens, the ducts themselves can wind up distributing those pollutants throughout the entire house.
